Writing achievement bullets that convert
Responsibilities describe a job. Achievements describe you. Here is the formula, with before-and-after rewrites.
The formula
Action verb + what you did + how you did it + measurable result. If a bullet has no number, no scale, and no outcome, it is a job description, not an achievement.
Before and after
Before: 'Responsible for managing the company social media accounts.'
After: 'Grew four social channels from 12k to 48k followers in 11 months by shipping a weekly content calendar, lifting inbound demo requests 27%.'
Before: 'Worked on improving website performance.'
After: 'Cut median page load from 4.1s to 1.3s by code-splitting the bundle and moving images to a CDN, improving conversion 9%.'
Finding numbers when you think you have none
Almost every role has quantifiable surface area:
- Volume: tickets, clients, transactions, patients, releases per month
- Money: budget owned, revenue influenced, cost avoided
- Time: hours saved, cycle time reduced, deadlines beaten
- Scale: team size, region count, systems supported
- Quality: error rate, satisfaction score, retention
Keep it tight
One to two lines per bullet, three to five bullets per recent role, fewer as you go back in time. Lead each bullet with the strongest word — never with 'Responsible for' or 'Helped with'.
