Finding hidden roles with better search keywords

The same job is posted under five different titles. Learn the title variants, boolean operators and alerts that surface roles most applicants never see.

One job, many titles

Companies name the same role differently: Data Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst, Insights Analyst, Reporting Analyst. If you search a single title you see a fraction of the market. Build a list of five to eight title variants for your target role before you search anything.

Search operators that work on most boards

Combine variants and filter noise:

  • Quotes for exact phrases: "product manager"
  • OR for variants: "product manager" OR "product owner"
  • Minus to exclude: "product manager" -senior -intern
  • site: to search one company's careers page through a search engine

Let the roles come to you

Save each search as an alert and check it daily rather than re-searching from scratch. Early applications get reviewed while the shortlist is still forming, and alerts are the cheapest way to be early.

Mirror the market language in your CV

Once you know the titles employers actually use, put the closest one in your CV headline. A CV that says "Business Intelligence Analyst" ranks for searches that a CV saying "Data Guru" never will.

Put this into practice

Scan your CV against a real job description and fix the gaps in minutes.
